Key Questions

1. What is reproduction? What are the different types of reproductive methods?

2. What is infertility? What causes it?

3. Why is it important to study reproduction?

4. What impact do reproductive biologists and endocrinologists have on our society?

Problem Scenario

My name is Jill. I married my husband when I was thirty-five years old. Neither of us had children. I decided to toss out the birth control pills about a year later. Nothing happened, so I went first to my family practice Doctor who told me to learn how to chart basil body temperature (BBT) and "go home and have a lot of sex" for six months. I still hate him for that comment.

After six wasted months I was referred to an Obstetrician who specializes in infertility. He looked at my basil body temperature (BBT) charts and decided our problem was my ovulation. From that point on, some things happened in an order I still don't understand. Here's a quick review of what's happened so far: Basil body temperature (BBT) for 16 months. Blood work for Thyroid tests – normal. Serophene for 8 months. Some anovulatory cycles. Pelvic and transvaginal ultrasound – normal. Hystero-salpenogram (HSG) in February 99 – normal. Abdominal Lap on March 4, 1999, endometriosis found & treated with laser surgery. Husband’s Sperm Analysis - normal

At this point my Doctor announced he could do no more for me. He referred me to a Reproductive Endocrinologist (RE).

Student Challenge

You are Jill’s Reproductive Endocrinologist. Looking at her test results, what do you think might be the problem preventing her from conceiving? What are possible treatments/procedures from the list below will you consider or eliminate and why:

· Invitro fertilization (IVF)
· Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI)
· Egg/sperm donation · Surgate mother

Student Product(s)

At the end of this unit, you will complete:

1. A computer generated report describing different forms of reproductive methods, evaluating the advantages and disadvantages of each, and defending their belief on related ethical dilemmas.

2. A computer generated chart and diagram illustrating the different reproductive methods.

3. Laboratory report.

Alignment with Boston Public Schools standards and Massachusetts State Framework

Standard or Framework

How it is addressed in your problem

As a review

Differentiate between eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells.

As a review

Distinguish between plant and animal cells.

As a review

Describe and compare the processes of mitosis and meiosis, and their role in the cell cycle.

Explain how zygotes are produced in the fertilization process.
